Brushed flannel, soft from the first wear rather than the fiftieth, cut generously oversized so it drapes instead of fitting.

Soft from the start is the only test a flannel has to pass, and it is the reason people come back for a second colourway.

The fabric

A brushed cotton-weight flannel. The plaid runs through earthy tan, slate grey and a denim blue in the main colourway. Classic button front, button cuffs, one working chest pocket.

How it fits

Chest 48 inches, length 28 inches, one size and cut generous. Six colourways — mustard, navy, pink, dark brown, sky blue and a hot pink.

Looking after it

Cold machine wash and tumble low or hang. Brushed flannel softens with every wash and pills a little at the cuffs in the first season, which is the fabric behaving rather than failing.

The most-worn of our comfy cute clothes and the obvious cute clothes for winter layer for anyone who does not want a coat indoors — a korean fashion jacket in all but name.

Why we took this one

Soft from the first wear rather than the fiftieth, which is the only test a flannel has to pass. Six colourways, because this is the piece people come back for in another colour.

A flannel that needs fifty washes to soften is a flannel you give up on in week three. Brushing it properly at the mill costs a little more and is the only test this garment has to pass. People come back for a second colourway, which is why we carry six of them rather than two.

Three ways to wear it

Buttoned — with jeans, as a shirt.
Open — over a white tee, as a light jacket.
Tied — round the waist when the afternoon warms up.

Before you order

One size and genuinely oversized, so it goes over a long-sleeved top as an October jacket. Six colours, which is more choice than most things here get — the navy and the dark brown are the quiet ones, the hot pink is not. Brushed flannel pills where a bag strap rubs; a comb twice a season fixes it. Of all our comfy cute clothes this is the one that ends up living in the back of a car, which is a compliment.
