Description

A plain crew-neck sweatshirt with the shoulders cut out and a small V at the neckline. One change to a shape everybody already owns, and it is the difference between a sweatshirt and a top.

It is what you wear in the week between seasons, when sleeves are too much and bare arms are not enough.

The fabric

A soft breathable sweat fabric, relaxed through the body, with ribbed trims at the cut-outs so they hold their shape rather than stretching into a wider hole over a season.

How it fits

Chest 27–42 inches, length 22.5 inches. One size, and the stretch genuinely covers that span. The cut-outs sit on the shoulder rather than off it, so a normal bra strap is hidden.

Looking after it

Cold machine wash and hang to dry. It presses easily if you want the seams crisp; a warm iron on the reverse is enough. Wash it with like colours for the first few goes.

Among comfy cute clothes it is the one you can wear out of the house without changing, and the casual cute clothes answer for a day that is too warm for sleeves and too cool for none.

Why we took this one

One change to a shape everyone already owns. It is the top for the week in between seasons, when sleeves are too much and bare arms are not enough.

It exists for a fortnight twice a year, which sounds like a poor argument until you count how much of a wardrobe is useless in those two weeks. Five colours, and the brights do far more for a plain jean than the white does — it gets packed for a holiday and then worn at home until October.

Three ways to wear it

  • Jeans — straight, high-waisted, with trainers.
  • Skirt — a knit midi, which turns it into something closer to an outfit.
  • Shorts — the brights in summer, where the cut-outs make sense of the sleeves.
