Description

A woven check in charcoal, navy and ivory — a proper plaid with depth to it rather than a printed grid. The leg is cut slim and straight, which keeps the pattern from taking over.

The 23.5 inch inseam is the reason they are here: a check trouser sharp enough for work and short enough to skip the alterations.

The fabric

Polyester, rayon and polyurethane — a blend that holds a crease out rather than in, and keeps a sharp line through a day of sitting. Front fasteners are concealed, so nothing interrupts the line over the hip.

How it fits

High-rise at the waist, with a hidden elastic panel across the back so they sit securely without a visible waistband seam. Inseam 23.5 inches, rise 12 inches, cut to a 29–30 inch waist.

Looking after it

Cold machine wash and hang to dry. It presses easily if you want the seams crisp; a warm iron on the reverse is enough. Wash it with like colours for the first few goes.

A 23.5 inch inseam is the reason these are here: a sharp check trouser that does not need taking up. The elastic is hidden across the back, so the front stays flat.

A standard trouser taken up by four inches loses the proportion along with the original hem, which is the quiet tax on petite dress pants. Starting short solves it at the till. The check is the reason to buy them rather than another black pair — it does the work of a pattern without a print anywhere near it.
