Description

A diamond-quilted jacket with a light fill — warm enough on its own in autumn, thin enough to go under a coat in winter without bulking out the shoulder.

It buttons rather than zips, which keeps it looking like a jacket instead of a liner.

The fabric

A light quilted shell with a thin fill, soft stand collar, two patch pockets and elastic at the cuff. Quiet rather than crinkly, which is unusual at this weight.

How it fits

Cut straight with room for a knit. Two colours, cream and a sage green.

Looking after it

Cold machine wash and hang to dry. It presses easily if you want the seams crisp; a warm iron on the reverse is enough. Wash it with like colours for the first few goes.

Light enough to go under a coat without bulking the shoulder, and good enough to wear on its own in October. The layer that makes two coats out of one.

A liner is designed to disappear under something else, which is why it is the most useful outerwear purchase after a coat: it extends a jacket you already own into a colder month instead of replacing it. Good enough to wear on its own in October, which is more than a liner usually manages.

Alpha sizing, cut slim enough to go under a coat — which is the whole design, and the reason a liner jacket is better value than another padded shell. On its own it is right for about ten degrees and no colder. Cream or sage. Wash it cold and tumble it on low with a dryer ball to stop the wadding clumping.
